In physics and mathematics, a vector is a quantity that has both magnitude (how much) and direction (where it’s going).
When applied to a company or team, the “vector sum” is a metaphor for how individual efforts combine to create a final result. If everyone is pulling in different directions, the company or team’s total output will be much smaller than the sum of its parts.
The Breakdown of the Metaphor
1. Magnitude (Effort) This represents an individual’s talent, hard work, and productivity. A high-performer has a “long” vector. They have a lot of power to move things.
2. Direction (Alignment) This represents where that effort is being applied. Is the person working toward the company’s or team’s primary goal, or are they focused on a side project, a different department’s agenda, or even personal gain?
3. The Summation In a vector sum, you don’t just add the lengths of the lines; you connect them head-to-tail.
Even though both are working hard, the company or team’s net progress is zero.
